A couple of months ago, I received an e-mail from the editor of Iowa Alumni Magazine, the bimonthly alumni publication of my alma mater. She wondered if I would be willing to answer some questions about my experiences as a student at The University of Iowa.
I happily obliged.
I used to be the poster child while working at the Office of International Students and Scholars — I had been interviewed by an Associated Press reporter, the radio station, the TV station, and the student newspaper. So why should the alumni magazine, now, be left behind?
I created so many good memories in my two years at the university … and as much as people questioned my choice when I spent a summer interning at NBC 11, I stood by my selection.
For many Californians it was mind-boggling that I would choose Iowa over Boston or Washington, D.C. — but most of these baffled people have never been to Iowa City.
They haven’t experienced the slow, easy-going pace of life, the warmth and affection of a university town, the acceptance of international students in a predominantly white area.
They don’t know what the Midwest has to offer.
All they see is the stereotype — corn fields and pigs.
Yes, life in California is wonderful — and I have plenty of reasons to love living in the Bay Area, but Iowa City has a special place in my heart.
It always will.

Once a Hawkeye … always a Hawkeye!
Very nice and heartfelt tribute, Mansi. I really enjoyed it because it reflects my own college experiences. A very, very special time. It may sound a little corny and trite, but a time and an experience that really is a big part of the foundation of one’s life that supports so many of our future successes & accomplishments – both personal and professional.
Thanks, Ronnie. I never really had a "college experience" in India, given that teachers hardly showed up for classes, and when they did, there weren’t any students! Our bachelor’s program was more about studying on our own and showing up for the exams. The University of Iowa was where I really got a sense of community and camaraderie.
That is so cool!!!!! Congrats on the recognition.
Though now I have to say that I hate you, because you are a hated Hawkeye.
Ah, what am I saying. Some of my best friends went to U of Iowa. I decided that everybody needs a flaw in their character to make them interesting.
Dave
Iowa State Cyclones all the way!!!!!!!!
I have two words for you, Dave: “GO HAWKEYES!!!!”
Nice Mansi,
Growing up in the Midwest(IL) & still living here (IN) it does have a lot to offer & the people here are wonderful. I’m glad your experience at Iowa was so wonderful for you & I’m glad you made some lifelong friends. Keep up the great work.
Hugs,
Bill
Thanks, Bill.
