Memories
Of green meadows
With massive trees
That turned red, brown
Orange, golden yellow
All the colors of a sunset
In the middle of a park.
Memories
Of walking at midnight
Sometimes fast
To catch a bus
Sometimes leisurely
Taking in the beauty
Of everyday simplicity.
Memories
Of a 10 by 10 room
In the basement
With one window
The view blocked by a bush
A tiny closet
A sleeping bag and a laptop
That I called home.
Memories
Of people, mostly white
With speckles of
Brown, red, yellow and black
Intermingling, sharing
Learning, bonding
Becoming friends
Then family.
With kindergartners in a local Iowa school
Memories
Of laughter
Interspersed with
Intense seriousness
Writing a thesis
Cramming for exams
Midnight snacking
The Java House.
Memories
Of licking snowflakes
White everywhere
The windchill
Wearing layers upon layers
Everything numb
But so pristine.
After a snowstorm in February
Memories
Of crossing the highway
To get to the biggest superstore
The hitched car rides
To do Indian groceries
Once every three months
Thirty miles away.
Memories
Of cooking disasters
Delicious sambhar
Taco Bell chalupas
Hot and sour soup
Muffins, croissants
Buttermilk.
Memories
Of flying every other month
The cab rides
The waiting
The lure of the Golden State
The internship
Spring and winter breaks
That were never cold.
Cultural Diversity Day at The University of Iowa
Memories
Of graduation
A sense of accomplishment
Pride
Happiness
The idea that I could
Conquer the world.
Memories
Of Iowa City
Names and faces
Etched in my mind
Places, aromas
Sights, experiences
Emotions
Conversations.
Memories
Of a kaleidoscope
Of moments
Made six years ago
Still cherished
Still alive
A part
Of who I was
And who I’ve become.

Excellent time capture of life in IC! I guess all of our lives were very similar then, exaclty as you described with little modifications here and there.
Thanks, Sangs. As I was writing this it dawned on me how fast time has flown by…Miss those days!
Memories are unique such that every time we visit them, they are altered.
I loved the different colours, tones, emotions and reflections that this post provided.
The pictures were nice leaves out of the pages of memories.
I am glad that life has given you beautiful memories as these.
Wishing you more lovelier moments and memories to come
Joy always,
Susan
Thanks, Susan
Lovely thoughts of a wonderful time. Memories are always fun to look back on. It’s amazing sometimes how quickly time seems to pass.
