I know this is an old post, but I came across it on Google after searching the exact question you posed.
I was researching "callings" because I think I may have found mine. I haven't gone for it yet, but one part I've been doing my whole life so it won't be a huge transition for me. I think I need to do it because I feel like a switch has gone off in me and everything in me is pushing me towards it. The switch has always been half on, but it finally went full force and I can't deny what I need to do anymore.
For me, the phrase "calling" has recently come to mean this: it is that thing that is calling out to you from beyond and from within. It is calling you towards it. Once you've heard it, you will never feel full unless you heed it's call.
I do believe a person can have more than one calling in life, and it is possible to fulfill them at different stages in life. For example, I feel a strong calling for something now, but I have a gut feeling that my calling will change when I hit a later stage in life. And I think I know what the new calling will be because I feel it lingering down there.
It's a strange thing that is so hard to explain because unless you've experienced it.

Anyhow, I hope you've found your calling 1.5 years after you posted this.

I believe culture is important in some way or another to all of us and i don't have a problem with this as long as we learn to accept and respect every other culture in the world.
However i have a problem with frontiers: Living in the 21st century, most of us would like to consider themselves as being free right? Democracy, human rights ect... But how is one really free when we need visas (and some are not granted them) to go and see the world that we were born in. How can anyone have the right to deny me the right of seeing the place where i was born, not just as a country, the entire planet? This really doesn't make any sense to me and that is why, loving my country doesn't stop me from dreaming of a one country, one nation planet.

How we would do that? That is an entire other question to solve.

Dear Mansi:

It has been a long time since I last visited here. I was going through one of my older posts and I saw your comment and immediately rushed here. How have you been doing? Hope all is well at your end.

And yes, in spite of not knowing any of the persons you have mentioned in your post, personally, their death left me quite sad and morose. Rajiv Gandhi and Lady Di, especially. And, inspite of not owning any Apple products, Jobs' death saddened me.

And as you have rightly mentioned, "Today is all we have."

Joy always,
Susan

Hey Mansi,

Welcome back to blogging.

I am no geek...don't own any iproduct. But I echo the sense of loss that millions connected to Apple directly or indirectly, have felt. Steve is (he is, not was) to the tech world what JL Baird is to television or Edison to light bulbs. We've lost a phenomenon.

But his words will ring on forever...

"Remembering that you are going to die is the best way I know to avoid the trap of thinking you have something to lose...... There is no reason not to follow your heart"

Need more reasons to not live the life you want to?

*I've written a few blogposts myself...will share them with you soon..*

Cheers!

So glad you are back to blogging. You are gifted...you write so well.

As I raise my one year old daughter, I remind myself of living in the moment and making the most of the present every day. It's like she is reforming me as a person as she grows up. Live the actual moment, only this moment is Life!

I had similar feelings when Princess Diana died. I was at a nightclub with friends and someone walked over to us and said, "Princess Diana just died." No one believed it, so we all rushed over to the one TV in the place and clustered around. We were stunned. Silent, in the midst of the booming dance music. Next to me, a very tall, muscled, bald guy turned and said, "I know you don't know me, but I'm on the verge of crying. Will you hold my hand?" I'll never forget that. The rest of the night was spent watching the news coverage, and the following day, more news coverage. Then her funeral. Such a sad, needless accident, and such a waste of so many lives. It took me a long time to get beyond the very personal grief I felt, along with the world.

A few years earlier, Sergei Grinkov, the Russian figure skater, died abruptly. I was assailed with such a wash of sadness that I didn't know what to do with how I felt. He was a beautiful young man, had a wife and small child and a whole life to live. Yet his time here was cut short, brutally so. At the time, I felt so sad and frustrated, and even felt a bit of guilt that I was still here...someone who hadn't done anything of note to change the world as that young man had.

I don't know that these types of deaths will ever make sense, and perhaps they aren't meant to. Maybe some of the reason they happen is to wake us all up, to jar us out of complacency and remind us that life is to be lived, as you so eloquently said, in the here and now.

Lovely article, Mansi.

Death especially when it is sudden always makes us stop in our tracks. It definitely questions our presences here and what our contribution is or will be and for how long.
